One of Sweden’s largest newspapers, SvD Brannpunkt, ran a comment on Wednesday demanding changes in the process for selecting the president of the Bank. For those of you who don’t read Swedish, translation of key points from a colleague at Forum Syd follows.
- The swedish government should officially call for an open and transparent process of appointing the new World Bank president.
- In the longer term Sweden should call for a more fundamental democratization of the World Bank.
- Sweden should also use the IDA 15 process to put pressure on the World Bank to change their policies towards a more democratic direction. Not to do that would be a waste of Swedish taxpayers’ money.
